Now is the best time, while the ground is warm for root development and the
sun is not hot enough to do any damage. You will need to prune back to
compensate and water plentifully

After the leaves have dropped. Try and take the rootball with its
attendant soil.

You might also take some old wood cuttings and strike them, just in case.

I agree with the advice but would suggest new wood cuttings. Have
never had one fail~~ Not even when making a row of sixty, in situ, to make
cordons.
Remove all lower buds to well above soil level~ leave just four buds
at the top. This might do so well that the old plant can be discarded
after a couple of years.
