Bird Seed Feeder
http://tinypic.com/hv8ow7.jpg
Thanks to Michael Adams I have produced the Bird Seed Feeder as described in another posting. I would like to correct a small error on that I called it 2" fencing whereas it should have been 2" fence netting, but you can see what I mean. The birds come in from the front on a 'direct flight path' and some come in from the back either through the Buddliea and/tree or trellis. As you will see the wire netting covers over so even if the Collared Doves land on it, they are unable to get in. None of this is 'fixed', just hooked over and under so would not be suitable for keeping squirrels off without fixing because they are tough little buggers. Hope this helps someone :-)) Mike -- .. |

Bird Seed Feeder
I replied to yours yesterday!! :-))
Hi Alan I had this problem with pigeons and collard doves. I have a bird seed feeder fixed to a fence post. The birds, mainly House and Hedge Sparrows would get on the perch and scatter the seed everywhere, that on the ground, wasted. So I fixed a tray of about 12" square underneath it about 8" down to catch the seed. Fine, birds went on there to scrabble about in it. BUT, the Pigeons and Collard Doves discovered that by standing on the tray, they were at the right height to pick straight out of the tray :-(( I wrapped 2" mesh fencing round the tray to stop said large birds landing. Worked a treat until they discovered they could get over the top. Another piece laid over the top solved that :-)) The Sparrows, Gold Finches, Blue Tits, Robins, Green Finches, Dunnocks, Coal Tits and Chaffinches can all go through the netting with no problem at all, whilst the Collard Doves have tried a few times, they sit on top wondering how the hell they can get in, but have almost given up. We are not troubled with Grey Squirrels as we have none on the Island here, we only have Reds and the nearest I have seen one to home was about 2 miles away :-)) If someone can point me to a web site where I can post a picture of the set up I would be delighted to do so. Mike Who doesn't knowingly tell lies despite postings on this newsgroup. -- .. "Alan Holmes" wrote in message ... Hope this helps someone :-)) It must be a good idea. Mine has been up for over a year now. It was built as a 'proof of concept' but as it seemed to do the job it has never been tarted up. It started off by just adding a plant saucer underneath to catch the spillage. Then had the umbrella fitted to keep the spillage from getting soaked by rain. Then had the wire netting added for the same reason as Mike's, to keep the pigeons out. It works just fine. http://www.bugsandweeds.co.uk/bird%20feeder.jpg -- ned http://www.bugsandweeds.co.uk last update 27.11.2005 |

It solves a problem we had ealier on. We had a plastic seed feeder hanging from a hook, but there was no tray or catch pan under, consequently, the birds would scatter the seed. Fine if the buggers went down and picked it up, but it was falling in amongst some long leaves. Tons of the stuff when we discovered it! What drew our attention to it was a rat calmly walking away across the path!!! 'That' is why I did the tray under. But I do like your :-)) Permission to copy please? Any Royalties to pay? Only making one. Mike The truth will prevail |

Buggers even climbed the tree and slid down the wire before the umbrella went on. And we had some very interesting plants appear underneath. !!!
