Bird Seed Feeder
http://tinypic.com/hv8ow7.jpg
Thanks to Michael Adams I have produced the Bird Seed Feeder as described in another posting. I would like to correct a small error on that I called it 2" fencing whereas it should have been 2" fence netting, but you can see what I mean. The birds come in from the front on a 'direct flight path' and some come in from the back either through the Buddliea and/tree or trellis. As you will see the wire netting covers over so even if the Collared Doves land on it, they are unable to get in. None of this is 'fixed', just hooked over and under so would not be suitable for keeping squirrels off without fixing because they are tough little buggers. Hope this helps someone :-)) Mike -- .. |

Bird Seed Feeder
I replied to yours yesterday!! :-))
Hi Alan I had this problem with pigeons and collard doves. I have a bird seed feeder fixed to a fence post. The birds, mainly House and Hedge Sparrows would get on the perch and scatter the seed everywhere, that on the ground, wasted. So I fixed a tray of about 12" square underneath it about 8" down to catch the seed. Fine, birds went on there to scrabble about in it. BUT, the Pigeons and Collard Doves discovered that by standing on the tray, they were at the right height to pick straight out of the tray :-(( I wrapped 2" mesh fencing round the tray to stop said large birds landing. Worked a treat until they discovered they could get over the top. Another piece laid over the top solved that :-)) The Sparrows, Gold Finches, Blue Tits, Robins, Green Finches, Dunnocks, Coal Tits and Chaffinches can all go through the netting with no problem at all, whilst the Collard Doves have tried a few times, they sit on top wondering how the hell they can get in, but have almost given up. We are not troubled with Grey Squirrels as we have none on the Island here, we only have Reds and the nearest I have seen one to home was about 2 miles away :-)) If someone can point me to a web site where I can post a picture of the set up I would be delighted to do so. Had a wonderful day with regards to the birds today. Started with a Robin,
then the Blackcap then later a Dunnock took a peanut from the peanut hanger and took it to the post the seed feeder is hanging from, sat on the post and eat it whilst a couple of Bluetits investigated the feeder. Then there was a magnificent flight of 4 Goldfinches on the trees and feeders. If anyone wants some colour and activity in their garden over the winter, I can recommend the birds :-)) Mike The truth will prevail -- .. "Mike" wrote in message ... that will take you straight to the picture Having said I was going out to buy some netting, when I woke up this morning, I began to wonder where I would be able to buy it, so can you give me a clue?(:-) Alan Ironmongers/hardware store. Some DIY places sell packs as well. Look where you would go for such things as nails, screws, hinges, locks, bolts for the door. Comes on rolls 24", 36" 48" 60" 72" high and 'about' 30 metres long which is where your problem might be. Unless you are going to do what I would 'like' to do, and taht is build a walk in aviary of say 3' deep, 6' high and 6' long for all the feeding stuff and possibly a Bluetit nest box, but cover it with a 2" mesh to allow the small birds in and out, but keep the bloody cats, Collared Doves and Pigoens out. With regards 'birds in the garden', bumped into a near neighbour in Tescos who reads this newsgroup and wants to vist my bird feeding set up and why don't I write a bit more about it for those who are gardeners, but would like to attract birds. I expleined that there is a birdwatching newsgroup, but she remarked that this would be more suitable for gardeners. There you are. Any reader interested in my 'trial and errors' which are now producing results? Mike The truth will prevail |

"Alan Holmes" wrote in a message: Having said I was going out to buy some netting, when I woke up this morning, I began to wonder where I would be able to buy it, so can you give me a clue?(:-) --- You could consider using the large mesh green or brown plastic netting designed for clematis. As it comes in a roll, it is dead easy to turn into a tube to fit round the supporting post, bird feeder and tray. To finish it all off, just cut two circular bits for the top and bottom using wire twists to position them, allowing cut outs for the post. Of course any self respecting squirrel would soon gnaw through plastic netting, so that idea is out for those of you who have them visiting. What about an Eagle Owl trained to eat just squirrels, collared doves and wood pigeons? Mike Roscoe |

It started off by just adding a plant saucer underneath to catch the spillage. Then had the umbrella fitted to keep the spillage from getting soaked by rain. Then had the wire netting added for the same reason as Mike's, to keep the pigeons out. It works just fine. http://www.bugsandweeds.co.uk/bird%20feeder.jpg -- ned http://www.bugsandweeds.co.uk last update 27.11.2005 |

It solves a problem we had ealier on. We had a plastic seed feeder hanging from a hook, but there was no tray or catch pan under, consequently, the birds would scatter the seed. Fine if the buggers went down and picked it up, but it was falling in amongst some long leaves. Tons of the stuff when we discovered it! What drew our attention to it was a rat calmly walking away across the path!!! 'That' is why I did the tray under. But I do like your :-)) Permission to copy please? Any Royalties to pay?
