Cornus alba light requirements?
Could anyone advise on this, please? I have a place in the garden where I
think one of the Cornus alba varieties might look good in winter, but the plot gets no sun from September to March. Would this plant tolerate this, as I'd need to put in several plants? Duncan |

what i am doing here. i have just ordered a cornus alba and i have read that they turn the brilliant red in full sun. i assume that they will still be colourful in patrial shade but obviously not as red "Duncan" wrote in message ... Would this plant tolerate this, as I'd need to put in several plants? If it is reasonably light in spring and autumn, I would give it a go. If it is really gloomy, very little will do well. Remember that, in the UK, half of the light is indirect (and three quarters is in winter). Sun, as such, is primarily a summer phenomenon :-( Regards, Nick Maclaren. |

Would this plant tolerate this, as I'd need to put in several plants? Yes. About 6 years ago I made a hedge with cornus alba and the stolonifera variety. Most of them are shaded because of a large tree in front, and a fence. I cannot see the difference in colours between those in the shade and those not. I have offered both varieties to a neighbour who has a north facing, dampest boggiest darkest corner garden you'd imagine but with a concrete fence. Both varieties are doing well there too and look better than mine because of the grey concrete behind them. |
