Thanks for the reminder: I'd completely forgotten how good pickled
mature cucumbers can be! I had a recipe for a fermented kind, which
were a knock-out. I stopped because the family weren't as keen as I
was. Something like quarter them lengthways, salt overnight, drain,
put in jar with water and herbs, and wait for them to stop
overflowing before sealing. Not unlike the sauerkraut or kim-u-chee
principle. I must have it written down somewhere...

I would like the recipe if you will share Mike?

And don't forget you make make tzatziki and cook with cucumbers in stir
fries.

See earlier message, aimed at Ophelia. I gather you like strong
flavours, so it would be worth trying. But I'm sure I had one where
the cues were quartered lengthwise: I've surfaced my
pickle-chutney-tracklement-receipt folders, but they're in great
disorder: if can get to the bottom of it, I'll post.

Ridge cucumbers,

these are well worth doing, better taste than shop and easy to
grow, do cover ground though.

As you say, they do take up space: and how many cucumbers can one

get
through?

I used to grow ridge cucmbers vertically to save space. You had to

tie
them up as they grew, though.

And what I didn't eat I pickled. I can report that one year I had a
shelf of wallies like Zeppelins, and most of them in individual
jars...

Mike, by mature do you mean ripe, i.e. when they go yellow?

No, except for that yellow egg-shaped variety (name escapes me),
which I grew once. I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear: I just meant
"full-sized" as distinct from "gherkin-sized".

I've got a few seeds for that variety - well, a similar one - they're
melon-shaped, yellow and lightly lemon-flavoured.

And a small (gherkin sized) climbing variety from Thompson & Morgan
called Cucino (F1 hybrid)
