Default How easy to dismatle a Greenhouse?

Hi, i posted a few days ago about asking your neighbour for their
greenhouse, well in the meantime someone in work has said that i could
have theirs, but i would need to dismatle it, now she does not know
alot so did not know the fixings.

Can someone say what tools i would need to dismatle in and is the glass
easy to remove?

Thanks

I did this once 10 years ago and it was more or less common sense.

1) remove all glass; the panes are usually held in place by small W shaped
springs. These are replaceable so you do not need to keep knackerred ones;
you can buy more glass and clips easily. Make notes of which panes went
where. Usually they just come in standard sizes of 2 feet wide and a
mixture of lengths apart from around the door wher you get odd shaped ones.
2) get a camera and photograph any complicated looking bits (e.g. around the
door and where gables meet ridge).
3) dismantle. Usually the only hard part is detaching from the
base/plinth/ground. Often the fixings/bolts whatever are corroded. You
will probably need to use fresh fixings for the new home. Most of the rest
of the framework is held together with small standard greenhouse bolts.
These have a square head which can be held by a screwdriver or spanner and a
stanard sized nut.
4) in my case, leave in back garden for 6 months nad re-erect during a
blizzard 2 days after giving up cigarettes.

Thanks

Default How easy to dismatle a Greenhouse?

On the assumption it is an Aluminium Greenhouse ........

Take lots and lots of photos from all sorts of angles and make sure that you
can identify what and where the photos are of. 'Top of Door Assembly', 'Roof
Light Assembly' etc etc etc

Then take more photos. easy with a digital Camera.

Then mark with coloured marker pens various joints with a code. II in red on
all pieces making a corner )) in green marking another corner XX in red
marking another corner.

Make an area available which is flat and level. Lay a few layers of blankets
down making sure they are all flat.

Remove the glass in the roof by removing the clips. These will be rusty and
most cannot be used again as they are a spring clip. Don't throw them away,
you will need to count them and buy new ones from the Garden Centre.

Clean each sheet of glass as it is removed and make sure nothing is sticking
to it.

Either lay each sheet of glass flat on the blankets, or stand them up,
almost vertical on a very firm wall.

If possible, keep different sizes of glass in different stacks. Don't worry
where they came from, your photos will tell you.

Remove the glass in the walls again my removing the clips.

Some glass will have overlap clips, keep those as well.

You are now down to a bare frame and you should be able to see all your
markers. If not, put a few more in.

The greenhouse comes to pieces with nuts and bolts. They are a special nut
and bolt systema nd some will snap off and break. These again are available
from the Gadren Centre.

Depending on how you are going to transport the greenhouse depends on how
much you strip it down.

Take photos as you strip it down so you have a record of its rebuild

If its wood, I expect it will only break down to front, back, sides and two
sections of top.

Any further assistance, come back to me.

Been there, done that, got the second hand greenhouse :-))

You'll need a screwdriver and a means of undoing the aluminium
nuts/bolts, usually the heads are captive, ie the nut turns without the
bolt also turning. Depending on age the nuts will be either 10mm or
7/16" (11mm). If you have a cordless drill and a means of driving
sockets that will be ideal. The frame may or may not be screwed down to
something, but again common tools and common sense are all you need.
Take a spade with you, you may have to dig it out. And a container for
all the clips, nuts, bolts etc. bear in mind that loads of the clips
are going to go PING and never be seen again. Also that more of the
glass is broken than you think, it just looks all right till you start
to move it. Can you tell I've done this recently? :-))

Dismantling is dead easy, putting back together may not be unless you
take simple steps to make it easy before dimantling. If you can, take
the front to rear parts off and leave the end sections as one piece, if
your method of transportation allows this. Otherwise, call the point
where it meets the ground on the left point A, Where the side meets the
roof point B, the top of the roof point C etc. Call the front point 1,
and number towards the rear. Then mark both ends of each piece A1, B2
etc and you'll know where it goes. Also take loads of digital photos of
the relevant joints.

We have an 8 x 6 greenhouse and many pieces are full length (7 I think it
is are full length)

No and yes. 1 person would take a good morning to do it, I would allow a day
if I was doing it from scratch and not know what I was doing. Yes the more
the merrier, BUT, you would have to have someone in control/command or you
would be getting in each others way and cocking things up. 2 would be ideal
I would think.

Something only you can answer, would it be posible to hire a long wheelbase
pick up, or do you know someone who has one, then you could transport it as
mine was, front, back, sides and top in two :-))

I had a friend who told me about the greenhouse in the first place and
another who had the pick up :-)) A couple of drinks on the next Lodge night
and that was it ..... done :-))

You need a bag of patience firstly. If possible take out the glass first by using a small pair of pliers on the clips if it is held in with clips. It should then be fairly easy to undoe the bolts with a spanner or screws with a long handled screw driver. If you could get the use of a flat truck or trailer and the greenhouse is not too large you may be able to transport it to your garden without too much dismantling.

First of all you do not say how old it is. Asuming its aluminium.

If its more than say 10 years old, the glass will be brittle, the
aluminium screws and nuts will have seized, and possibly if its got a
base frame, it could be rusted thru. Sometimes small steel nuts/bolts
were used in the very bottom corners, so you will need a small dia
drill bit or an angle grinder.

You will then need to source replacement screws and nuts, glass
sealing rubber, etc.

Removing the glass is a 2 man job, especially from off the roof, and
always wear gloves. One slip and off comes your finger, or a big gouge
in your thigh.

Here's one I had to move last year.
http://www.gb-online.co.uk/follies.html

Mark every piece of metal that makes up a corner, in a unique manner.
Take masses of photos. Some greenhouses you can loosen some of the
vertical side members and sort of fold them down, like a
parallelogram.

Also check out another of 2 years ago.

Notice the plastic tub, it easier to throw all the spring clips etc,
into it when you are up the steps taking the roof apart.

May help you, may not! shrug

Last greenhouse I moved was an 8 foot by 6 foot.
Borrowed a friends pickup truck with towbar,
and another friends car transporter trailer.
Undo bolts holding frame to base with an angle grinder!
Four of us in the green house,
one to each corner.
Lift and carry to trailer.
Large tarpaulin to cover and strap down.
Eight miles at a slow speed late evening when the roads weren't busy.
Arrive home
Four of us back in greenhouse
Carry to final resting place.

Job done!

Time one hour.

Then used nail gun to fix frame to base, at a later date.

Please be aware that with older greenhouses, the glass was bed on the frame
with a mastic, newer models use rubber beading.
The Mastic will be well attached to the glass by now if any age, and in
colder weather it will be very difficult to remove glass.
You may need to cut mastic from glass with sharp so be very very careful,
this would need to be done from inside so hard hat is order of the day.

When completed, enjoy the the benefits of glasshouse growing, and the peace
and tranquility it can bring, theres nothing like potting up in a warm
greenhouse when temperature is low outside.
Use an mp3 player or small battery cd player with small speakers obviously
playing "Pastoral" symphony, or "new world" Or even Pink Floyd.LOL
Also I would urge you to wear screenblock, as the suns effects are amplified
inside glass, as I know to my cost.
Regards
Cineman
