Default What do do with shredded waste?

Hi all,
I've got loads of lopped off branches from conifers to put through the
shredder when I hire it in at the weekend. I intend to compost it but,
as I am about to lay a new lawn in a couple of weeks, was wondering if
it would be worth mixing it in with the top soil instead - or is that a
really dumb idea? As you may have guessed, I am not very knowledgeable
when it comes to things like...er...gardening - but trying to learn!
Many thanks,
jd
