Something that nobody has posted, which surprises me, is to grow
sprawling plants around them and have an island bed that happens
to have a manhole cover in the middle. Many plants are suitable
for that, depending on soil, location and aspect, including
ceanothus, helianthemum, rosemary, aubretia, something white I
can never remember the name of but have grown, etc. etc. Most of
those are tough enough to survive children, too.

You can buy recessed manhole covers specially made for your problem that

you
can plant with turf, or block paving.
See... http://www.pavingexpert.com/recess01.htm
You would only see the thin edge then.

Spare a thought for the poor person who has to lift the 'lid'. Some of
those
block paving filled covers are very heavy indeed!

True, I have to lift one every time I clean my pond, but it is possible and
with turf in it there would not be so much weight.
