Not nearly as bad as last week. The result was quite good but it was
a cross between a gardening programme and "What not to wear". White
trousers/white skirt not quite appropriate!

Ah but didn't Judith garden in the now famous golden slippers?

Yes but I don't think she intended to. That makes all the difference.
If you happen to be wearing something (eg golden slippers) and go out
into the garden with the intention of just looking and then start
weeding, then you just forgot to take them off and remembered when it
was too late. As it were.

But the point was that they'd _stopped_ doing hands-on gardening. At
least the ready-made garden they got would, we hope, get them out there
again.

So how was that going to be therapeutic then? Isn't that like doing up
an "adult's room" so they can sit in it and relax?

Well, it was a start from zero. She was below zero before, and was
dragging the whole family down with her. If it gets her out there
instead of being a prisoner, that's a point gained: and even just
sitting in fresh air, maybe hanging out the washing, saying "Hello"
over the wall to passers-by, are no bad things in themselves.

Isn't a garden the least static thing you could enjoy? It needs tending
and time spent on it and the mother said that she didn't have any time
as she had the twins.

The lack of time was just something she was telling herself: it doesn't
take any longer to do things with twins outdoors than indoors. There
was an unhealthy set of habits and some sad associations to be broken;
I've no idea if it will work, of course -- wherever you go, you always
find yourself waiting there.

Here's their reply (lets hope they take notice!):

Dear Ms Cockskull

Thank you for your e-mail regarding 'Digging Deep'.

I understand that you feel that this programme is of poor quality.

If I may explain, whilst we try to provide a wide range of programmes across
our television output that will be of interest to every section of our
audience, there will inevitably be times, hopefully rare, when what is on
offer does not meet your own particular interests. Research shows us that in
a typical week we do provide a substantial number of programmes which
everyone can enjoy, but I am sorry that you have been disappointed with the
choice on offer recently.
I think the BBC is quite right to ignore the fact that a large number of people hate a particular programme. What matters is whether its intended audience like it. If it really is so bad that it doesn't achieve its intended audience, then it will surely die. Long may it remain so, otherwise we would never get any interesting television. I have minority tastes, and if the BBC didn't take this attitude it (like ITV) would never show anything I wanted to watch. I naturally accept that most of what it shows is not what I want to watch.

We probably aren't their target audience.

Any more than we're the target audience of the average tat-filled GC ;-)
