Default carol Klein has dirty fingernails.

That's my girl. All else is forgiven. A gardener without 'em
is not a hands-on gardener, but you've got down to the
fundamentals - the soil.
Well done Carol.

'course she has! It is de rigueur for any Gardening Celeb these days,
hadn't you noticed?

There are times when it's patently obvious that the Celeb in question
has been directed to dirty their hands up a bit for the camera (the
amount of muck/mud/soil on display not being commensurate with the
activity in question).

It's because the poncey bloody middle-class TV-ocracy who make tele
programmes these days (3rd generation some of 'em) never really realised
before, that you might get your hands mucky sometimes when you're
gardening -- so they think it's a good idea to rub it in (so to speak).

Bloody annoying. You never caught Percy with mucky hands - horny and a
little besmirched, maybe, but never *mucky*. I can't even remember The
Mighty Geoff (either of 'em) having hands that were that mucky, either
-- and they could teach those pansies Monty and Joe a thing or two, let
me tell you that for nothing!

Bloody poncey Londoners.

And another thing - that Carol Klein has abandoned her Northern roots
for the soft red earth of Devon.
