Holly (Ilex) - need some advice.
The message
from Dave contains these words: /prune/ Unfortunately, quite a mature hedge got destroyed by a mixture of woodworm in some trees, Wood-boring beetle only attacks dead wood. What did the hedge consist of? and ivy sufforcating others. I've never heard of ivy suffocating a hedge either. It *MIGHT* just dry out the soil too much for some species though. So I have quite a large gap. Living on a reasonably busy road, I want something almost instant. But clearly costs rises dramatically with the sizes of the plants. Mahonia and Berberis are thorny, evergreen, and transplant very well IME. They also have berries the birds will love. (I make jelly from Mahonia (Oregon grape) if I manage to get them before the blackbirds and pigeons. PS, sorry about the bit about "Digging the whole is enough work!" I'm not quite sure why I spent hole that way! There's something about typing for newsgroups that sends everyone's spelling haywire at times! English never was my strongest subject (I'm a scientist/engineer), but even I was surprised I could spell hole with a w in front! Or 'spelt' with an 'n'?
