Charge for compost bin
Secrertary of the allotments says he's just heard today the govt is
looking at charging people for every compost bin they have. Have had a quick look on the news online but can't see anything about it... -- http://www.freedeliveryuk.co.uk http://www.holidayunder100.co.uk |

Have had a quick look on the news online but can't see anything about it... Possibly related to the proposed charges for large scale composters - previously exempted for 1000 tonnes per year, but DEFRA are proposing a reduction of the limit to 40 tonnes per year and with a £50 charge for an exemption certificate. Sounds more like a cock up in trying to implement environmental controls rather than a new 'stealth tax' threat. http://www.letsrecycle.com/do/ecco.p...stitemid=10955 DEFRA http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/co...mption-review/ All this I know from doing a search for 'compost' on the google news site. |

Either they get rid of our waste which costs them or we are encouraged to compost which saves them money. |

That might explain his slight confusion and lack of reality. The best thing to do with idiots like that who start and spread rumours is to say they are telling lies unless they can back up what they claim with written proof. They soon shut up and get a life. |

Ignore half of it and there may be some credence in half of what's left. When it comes up with alarmist rubbish like this ? "How green gardening is encouraging an explosion in rat population" Article starts by claiming that 'research suggests' that the trend for compost heaps and eco gardens is fuelling an explosion in rat numbers Shock horror figures on the numbers of people seeing rats and whether they keep chickens, have compost bins or use bird feeders. Fair dues to the actual journalist involved, he does point out that the survey was conducted for a Pest Control company, he also points out that some of the 'non composting' people don't even have gardens, and makes the good point that people who have chickens or make compost are more likely to be IN the garden in the first place. I suspect that the shock horror parts were added later by a sub editor, so in my view, 'yes' you should knock the Daily Mail http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...opulation.html |

From: http://tinyurl.com/bz4pqg That sounds similar to Bristol. I had to buy my 'green wheelie bin' which I can use for garden waste and cardboard. I also have to pay an annual charge of, IIRC, £29.00 for the service - but it does save me going to the tip. This arrangement started about 2 years ago. The green bin is collected, as is the food waste which goes in a separate bin provided by the Council, weekly. Works well and if you don't want a 'Green Wheelie bin' you can buy sacks for garden rubbish. Seems somewhat of a cheek to expect people to buy the bin and/or be charged annually for this sort of thing, given that the LA would (presumably) rather people did this so as not to have to landfill it. Our garden waste is also collected here, in the same wheelie bin that takes kitchen food waste, but they don't have the cheek to charge for it (not that we really use the facility, except for getting rid of say things like brambles or weeds I don't want to compost) -- Chris French |

Free, and they give you the bin. You can purchase a second bin if you need it, and I think they may make a yearly charge for emptying that. I now have three bins in my garden - grey for general rubbish, blue for recycling and brown for compostable waste. All free. -- Kathy It's pointless to try and discuss ethics with a spider. |
