Probably a silly question but can urg have its own web site so that
when people look up "garden hints, questions, problems, answers,

sends them here?

I'd have thought it should be on Google groups somehow could it not, or
at least a mention of it so that those people who might not have the IT
knowledge can get on easily. Most would not want to install and play
about with Agent or Thunderbird which is why windows and OE etc. has
cornered the market.

I've tried to get into a number of Forums etc and always end up back at
the Ngs, simply better in every way.

I agree. One interface (your client) and a high degree of configurability
never found in web forums.

I'm wondering how we could promote Ngs as it appears there are a high number
of surfers that have never heard of them. They obviously don't just click on
things, ie. Newsgroups in Tools, to see what happens as I did all those
years ago.
One only has to see how many come here via a web site instead of direct
through their e-mail client, Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail....... most
computers come with those and they do work OK despite what some say.

The ability to filter out junk on newsgroups varies. Am I right in thinking that
although you can filter mail, you can't filter newsgroups with Thunderbird?

You do have some newsgroup filters in Thunderbird but it is far less
sophisticated than the filtering available in Agent.

I can only get the filters to work for mail.

What are you trying to filter on?

When you're in a newsgroup, if you click Tools\Message Filters, you
will get the opportunity to create some. Alternatively, if you right
click on a sender's email address, you will find the option of
creating a filter. It's basically the same process as it is for emails.

I have been through that. It doesn't remove the messages sent from the e-mail
address I specified.

I mainly use them on troll infested groups to junk mail from known
trouble makers.

Does it only catch the ones that occur after the filter has been specified?

Yes. It would be nice to be able to apply the filter to the messages
which have already been downloaded but it doesn't support that.

I do find the filtering limited (when compared to Agent or Dialog) but
I haven't had a problem with it not working.

I am not the only person who can't get Thunderbird newsgroup filtering to work

It's worth noting that that thread was discussing a test version of
Thunderbird. I don't know whether the bugs they were talking about
also exist in the main release.

I know Martin but it's the people who don't have the knowledge or
confidence to change their system that are often the ones that would
benefit most from this newsgroup!

Ah well, having a Mac......... ;-))

That is one example of what I meant.

For those willing to apply just a *little* effort, Opera has all the
answers.
It combines an excellent, safe web browser with email and a newsgroup
client - all in one program.
It has a powerful spam filter, and separate configurable message filters
that are limited only by your own imagination.

It is available in versions for Windows, Mac, Linux and mobile phones.
And it's free.
