Solar garden lights
wrote in message ... hound wrote: apologies if this is off topic. Has anyone any experience of solar garden lights? How long do they last? They seem to cost from ?1 (from the pound shop) upwards....... Any recommendations??? I think you will find it's a "you get what you pay for" market. We have had 2 lots of 'cheap' lights, they don't tend to last more than a few months before becoming so pale as to be useless. Whichever type you buy, it won't hurt to clean the solar panel and change the NiCad battery with a fully charged one once in a while. A fully charged battery will give the outfit a new lease of life while the original battery is being charged up. Bill |

I did succumb and bought a couple from Poundland today. The mushroom on a stick type. http://www.poundland.co.uk/images/10...lar-garden.jpg They've been on a while so far - seem ok. Let's see how long they last. Thanks for all your advice I don't mean to be rude but why do you want them? Unnecessary lights at night confuse and damage moths (which navigate by the light of the moon) and stop you and yours enjoying a clear vision of the night sky - the stars. We've used lights in the garden at night but only to guide people from the church next to us up the path to the house for some parish 'do' or other and that's maybe twice or three times a year. Lovely velvety darkness and the glimmer of the stars is magical. -- Sacha Your location sounds idyllic, but a couple of solar powered lights wouldn't make a bit of difference to the light polution we currently enjoy here! Things were improved slightly when several of my lights were nicked ! Bill |

Unnecessary lights at night confuse and damage moths (which navigate by the light of the moon) and stop you and yours enjoying a clear vision of the night sky - the stars. The quick answer, is because I like the idea. I understand the idea of light pollution, but living this close to the centre of London, it's small fry compared to the streetlights, trees with nets of lights in, the glow of the sky. There is plenty of all sorts of pollution round here - noise, fumes from aircraft, cars, bonfires, light coming out of next door's kitchen window..... I think my half dozen LEDs aren't that significant (till every garden gets half a dozen LEDs perhaps). I noticed that the sun was noticeably brighter when there were no aircraft - back to normal now. Plants in my mother's garden in Bedford (50 miles north) are further advanced than they are here. |

Things were improved slightly when several of my lights were nicked ! Bill I must admit it is pitch dark here at night. You have to up the hill and out of the village to see a distant loom of light. Some town-dwellers moved in here years back and tried to get the council to instal street lighting but everyone was up in arms about it and the effort failed, thank goodness! -- That is something I miss having moved into a town where we are surrounded by street and security lights. I well remember a townie pal of mine scoffing at being offered a torch for his walk to the pub when staying with us in Langthwaite. He was back in less than 5 mins asking where the torch was kept having fell over an unseen obstacle. It was a pitch black night mind. Mike |

I also have a PIR security light which is solar powered (bought from Solar Security Solutions - Protect Your Property) which is great. Its very bright and works perfectly. A real contrast to cheap stake lights I have. Alex |
