Bird feeder mystery death!
Any ideas? See this:
http://i39.tinypic.com/jr5fy9.jpg This blue tit was found dead in the birdfeeder, hanging there, as you see. My friend, whose feeder it is, says: Recently dead (it was still warm) and completely jammed into the seed feeder shoot!! Head squashed to a pulp - took a lot of effort to free it. What the hell has gone on? Has it flown into the hole or what? ! She says she had to remove all the seeds to get the poor thing out. The head was crushed, but not bloody. Her garden is small, and very enclosed -- it would be virtually impossible for anyone to sneak in and do this as a "prank" -- not without leaving broken bits of fence, shrubbery etc. Has anyone ever experienced such a thing? Bird flies full tilt into feeder hole?! Cheers John |

We've got a feeder where the holes are too small for them to reach into... that needs some serious messing with. -- http://www.Voucherfreebies.co.uk http://www.holidayunder100.co.uk |

If there had been a void in the seeds which suddenly collapsed on top of the bird's head, it seems unlikely it would crush it to a pulp or at all. The skull is bone, after all. One for Miss Marple! Desperately trying to get away from a sparrow hawk? Wouldn't it be a bit cramped for a sparrow hawk to hide inside the feeder? Cunning though. Ian |

Bird flies full tilt into feeder hole?! Cheers John The bird would not have flown 'full tilt into the feeder hole', it would have approached the hole claws first and grabbed the horizontal rails and then put its head into the feeding bay. Someone suggested a slug of seed falling and crushing the head. These seed feeders are fitted with an internal canopy so the seeds fall 'round the side'. Prank? I would like to see someone get near the bird to do such a thing. My theory? And it will allow certain people to laugh and scoff.. ..... """SOMETHING""" has frightened the bird and it has had such as a heart attack .............. look at the feet, not on the perching rails ............. and the bird has collapsed and thus literally 'hung itself' Wrong? OK, come up with something more pos. Mike Whilst I have your attention. How do I encourage Red Squirrels? We have them passing through, but would like them "resident"? -- ....................................
