You'll also spot death cap mushrooms happily munched by slugs, etc. Birds happily eat the hottest chilli peppers with no effect. Whilst I have little doubt that early man tested the edibility of plants by observing whether other animals could eat them, we need to realise that this is not a reliable test, especially as you get more remote from other mammals.
