Default Flying birds lost again ?

About 1700 hrs in north west london today, we saw about 50 birds or so
travelling together in several * V * formations and they were heading due
East.

I guess i'm used to seeing birds flying south for the sunny weather and
north to come back again; but what would all these guys be doing, do you
think?
