Default Radish root damage

This year my radishes have grown well but are badly
damaged by a worm/maggot.
I thought that the usual maggot is not normally a
problem in the Spring. Anybody else had problems this
year?
I wont use pesticides cos no point in growing own
vegetables if full of poison; dont want to cover the
crop cos lines of radishes look nice in the veg beds but
lines of fleece do not.

Are you sure it's not Flea Beetle?

Thats my bet.

Radish grows quickly and you need to sow and harvest in strict succession
so the maggot does not mature. They will turn on your cabbages, caulli,
brussels sprouts, swede, broccolli etc. next(if you have them)
I put 4" square peices of carpet with a slit in them to shroud brassicas,
like a collar and it has worked fine for me last year. radish are too
numerous and fiddly to do this with?

I hope this helps, that fly/maggot is a real pain if not prevented.

Baz

I get similar problems with radish and can never grow it in open ground.
Not only do the radishes get full of tiny holes but so do the leaves. Is
it the same pest that makes both holes? Is that flea beetle?
I just wondered if the OP got lots of holes in his radish leaves too?

Default Radish root damage

Well, the most common view here is that my radish has
been eaten by the grubs of cabbage root fly. I found a
good article from Gardening Which? here

http://www.which.co.uk/documents/pdf/cabbage-root-fly-
151755.pdf

Seems that for small plants like radish there is not
much you can do. Protecting with fleece seems to be
the most effective but you have to bury the edges of
the fleece under several centimeters of soil - not
practical when I want to grab a few radish every day.

It seems that if you grow the radishes on ground used
for a cabbage family plant the year before then the
flies are likely to emerge from pupae in the ground
and spread under your fleece! My radish are growing on
ground occupied by chard last year.

I didn't used to have problems but in recent years my
previously problem-free leeks are ravished by leek
moth and now my previously problem-free radishes by
cabbage root fly. Climate change or just pests
spreading?

DAvy
