Yes, I mean Centranthus ruber. It comes in pink and white, and is just
about everywhere you look where I live. It's not bad-looking, but I've been
careful not to let it get a foothold in my garden.

I remember Valerian (both white and pink forms) being common when we
lived out on the Llyn peninsula in the late 40's

It grows about 3ft to 4ft tall eventually, and is invasive. It has very
deep tuberous roots. It is very hard to kill off, because its roots go
very
deep. It is becoming a problem down here in South West Dorset.

Sorry, I can't remember what the flowers look like. I always attack it
before it ever gets to the flowering stage!

Many thanks,

Jim

Looks like Ground Elder to me. Can be a major nuisance I agree.

PS The fresh leaves make a good soup! Don't have a recipe
unfortunately.
R. :-)

It's not ground elder as the OP said it grows to 3-4 feet tall.

Looks like ground elder to me, which can grow pretty tall - I have
certainly seen it over 2 feet.

the leaf is wrong for ground elder - too glossy, too yellowish and too stiff.

Hi Jim, Yes, as has been suggested definantely 'alexanders' or a more apt name 'horse parsley' I have it growing all along my lane (near Falmouth) and always have to laugh watching the local horse riders trying to get their horses past it, as they absolutely love the stuff. The riders having often to dismount to 'drag' their steeds away from it Hahahaha! Apparently, it is extremely good for the horses digestion !!
