Each topic, if it goes on for more than a few posts, tends to split. So for example A and Z both reply, B replies to A, Y replies to Z, and you in effect have two "threads" both under the same heading. 20 posts on the 'threads' have completely diverged, and there are now 6 of them. A good newsreader reflects this threading so you can read one thread to the end (or not, if you prefer) before going to the next. A web forum presents them in order of posting so you are dodging about all over the place.
That's down to poor posting discipline, on that particular site (pprune) the mods would either just delete those posts or split them into a new thread if they were important enough

GB is not a very message friendly site because of the need to interface with groups, a good forum will have buttons for adding quotes, images, urls, you tube embedding etc.

Ah, I see - you are arguing for using pure forums, I've now started to argue against using a forum to access a newsgroup.

Yes, I post to a forum and to a newsgroup. I prefer the newsgroup - it's what I'm used to, and I like the informality, and the way a newsgroup can develop and keep some sort of order without having a mod. My feeling is that a newsgroup encourages the sort of rambling inconsequential chat that we get on urg and which I enjoy, whereas forums are more disciplined and less relaxed. It also takes a lot more typing on a forum - none of those handy acronyms.

But I also feel regret for the newsgroups of 10-15 years ago, when it was much easier to turn newsgroup friendships into real life ones.

Oh sorry Kay, yes I was arguing for a pure forum rather than a forum as an interface to a news group.
It doesn't have to be too rigid you could have, for a gardening one, a sub forum called the potting shed where you could start a thread on anything you liked, well, within reason. :-) And you can have a chat room where two or three members can have a chat, or more if they are all fast typers.

In message , Granity

I do use news groups but I find them a PITA as you get every thing
downloaded whether you want to read it or not, and the download speed
is
throttled to 116Kbs. With GB I just open the threads that interest me
and they come down at 7.5Mbs

No throttling here downloading directly at 20mbs
Forums do have some very real advantages over groups, you don't need to
quote anything unless you want to reply to a specific pert of someone's
text,

You don't on a news group. I have selected which bits of your last posts
I wish to retain and cut out the rest - simples.
you can use emoticons if you want,

No big deal You may want to send them, I don't want to receive them
you can embed pictures into
your posts

Ideal for virus propagation.
but above all you can moderate and ban people if they
seriously misbehave,

As you can with any half decent news reader, and the decision is made by
each member of the group according to their own individual tastes and
preferences.
you can set the rules in a 'stickey'

Set them in a Kill File - Kill author, subject thread etc.
There are companies such as 'Free Forum Hosting - InvisionFree'
(http://www.invisionfree.com/) that allow you to set up forums for
free.

I note they have strict rules about gb users using it for their own
advertising, but they make no effort to monitor this and remove ads.

Pointless rules then
So
it would look as if they have taken a pragmatic decision that it's
bringing in the money OK as it is.

So not strict at all then.
It does get taken down if you click on the 'report as inappropriate
button' but I think it is only if it originates from a GB subscriber,
not an URG one.

I think Granity was talking about something rather different. She's not talking about urg posts.

There are people who register with gardenbanter simply to post adverts, which is against what gardenbanter states to be its rules. If it weren't for gardenbanter, these particular posts wouldn't be seen in urg. gardenbanter has a 'report as inappropriate' button, though my experience is that there's no-one acting on the reports.
