Default Replacing a heather bed

Thanks for all the comments and ideas. Now I've got to
start the work of clearing the bed whilst swmbo
decides if any of you suggestions appeal to her.!

There was a suggestion for layering the bushes, which
could have been relevant a few years ago, but I think
they've gone too large, with lots of dead branches. A
lot of them do lay naturally on the ground, but none
that I've found have rooted themselves.
