Default Palms in tubs

Would they/could they type of question.

Two very old and poor Horse Chestnuts were cut down last week and palms were
planted in tubs placed on the two stumps. This was done to 'disguise' the
stumps ready for a Garden Party this weekend.

Question to those with more experience than me, i.e. anybody

When the palm roots have penetrated the bottom of the tubs, will they
establish themselves in the stumps and in years to come, when the tubs have
rotted and long since gone, rely on the stump roots for nutrition and
growth?

Shows the palms in tubs on stumps.

(With nearly a hundred attending the Garden Party, 'someone' is bound to ask
that question)

Mike
