Default Hostas in the pond

I have a hosta in a pot which has stood in about 2-3in of water at the edge
of my pond for about 4 years. The plant seems to thrive and produces a good
display. However, another hosta that I placed in a similar position last
summer is definitely not thriving, so I have taken it out of the water. Now,
this might be a silly question but, do different varieties of hosta prefer
more/less water?

Cheers!
Gilbert (a pondman recently turned gardener)
