Default Hose connector internal diameter

There are various places in the garden where it would be convenient to
connect additional lengths of hose to fixed hoses (overflows off the
waterbutts, for example). The Hozelock connectors make it easy to do
this, but I've noticed the internal diameter of these is tiny, far
smaller than the diameter of the hose. Doesn't this significantly
decrease the flow rate? (Which is important when trying to get rid of as
much as possible because the butt is about to overflow.) Are there
connectors (other than ducktape) without this disadvantage?

Where you need maximum flow I'd use the kind of plastic pipe sold by Builders Merchants and DIY sheds for overflows etc
and go for something like 40 or 50mm dia - it's cheap and easy to use. A short constriction like a hose fitting doesn't
affect flowrate that much compared with using a long length of small hose. That doesn't sound very clear so put another
way - the odd small connector in a length of decent sized hose is not that important.

I thought I might be mistaken, which is why I asked :-) But it does seem
logical that one really narrow bit will determine the flow rate
everywhere beyond that point. Something to reason through as I do the
shopping...

For the sort of pressure your talking about out of a water butt its
barely significant I should think. If you need it emptied fast, why not
just buy a piece of wider diameter hose thats long enough? Or add an
overflow tank?

We've already cut a second hole to add a second hose to increase the
volume of the overflow -- and (just as important) direct it to two
different bits of the garden :-)

Only other type of connectors I can think of are the 'push fit' ones are
really meant to be semi permanent. They may have a larger internal
diameter than the Hozelock system.

Clearly I'm mistaken in my assumption that the Hozelock ones could
restrict flow, so I'll revert to those.

thanks
