Default Plums

Hi,
This year the plum tree, which we've only had for 2 years had masses
of flowers and set masses of fruit the majority of which have only just
dropped. Is this because the tree is to young to support masses of fruit,
or has the weather a part to play?

We didn't bother pruning the tree this year as we wnated to grow some sturdy
branches- could this be a factor?
last years crop was the first and ok was alot less, however all the fruit
set and we had a tasty summer of plums. Any advise would be welcome so
next year i can either thin out or take other action.

Thanks
Jules
