Is it too late to plant potatoes?
I haven't got round to doing this yet and would still like to try.
Is it still possible? Would you recommend any particular varieties? And the main question, where could I get them from? I have seen Marshalls advertise potatoes for sowing now, that you can pick in late Autumn/Winter, up to Christmas. The only trouble is that I've had a lot of problems with Marshalls this year and would prefer to use another supplier. Any suggestion? Colin ----- (Please reply via the newsgroup) |

Should be ok, assuming you have sprouting seed pots which look healthy. If you have no seed, I note there is a seed catalogue which advertises an 8 week harvest "new potatoes on Xmas day". HTH Paul |

I had thought about doing new potatoes for Christmas - until I saw how much the specially treated (held in chill, I believe) seed potatoes cost. Over £6 IIRC, for more seed potatoes than I really wanted, too. Regards, VivienB |

Can you mention names, phone numbers (if poss). If it's Marshalls though, I might not bother (I know they do them, but don't want to use them again because of previous poor service). Thanks, Colin ----- (Please reply via the newsgroup) |

Thanks, Colin A couple of weeks ago, we were holding a 'post mortem' after potato blight swept thru the allotments and a neighbour confirmed that it was not too late to plant. He will be back from his hols this w/end and I will repost the name of the catalogue, where the '8 week harvest' is mentioned. In the meantime, perhaps you could google up some possible suppliers. Apols for delay, turns out the catalogue he had was 'Browns' - but he hasn't used them, therefore unable to recommend or otherwise. Paul I have written this before, but I can't remember the thread. Last year I bought potatoes from D T Browns, followed their instructions and all the family (17) enjoyed them on Boxing day, and my wife and myself for several weeks after. Needless to say I have just ordered more. Cheers John T |
