OK, I know three acres id a fair area, but if you divide it up into

a
grid you'll be surprised how quickly you can do it. (Yes, I have!

And a
six acre field at that, and I dug the weeds out with a thistle spud

and
a parsnip fork.)

:-)
..... a man after my own heart.

*AND* I cut the hay in it with a scythe, tedded it with a hayfork, and
later made a proper stack, but thatched it with a couple of those big
fertiliser bales opened out 'cos I ran out of time and you can't get
thatching straw at my favourite price either....

I was put to such shame by the weed-defeating exploits of these URG
superheroes that to try to salvage a modicum of masculine pride I did a
quantity survey. This afternoon, from an area of approx 50 sq yards --12
paces by 5, 100th of an acre?-- I dug out 193 dandelions. I doubt I got
them all.

Factor in that this is very stony ground on a steep Welsh hillside with
old established pasture that has root structure like steel mesh and tell
me...

do I have dandelions?

Default herbicide for dandelions?

Thanks to everyone for the input. I guess I can improvise a spot

weeder.

A couple of supplementary questions:

are all broadleaved herbicides alike? Any particular brand?

Part of the 3 acres (about 1 acre) is used for grazing sheep. At

this
time of year the grass is not ready for grazing so the dandelions

get a
head start. Does anyone know how much time should be allowed between
applying a herbicide and allowing animals on to graze? If most
broadleaved herbicides are used for lawns, that information may not

be
on the bottle.

There is an agricultural herbicide called, Grazon-90, made by Dow Agro
Sciences, which recommends that grazing stock be kept off the treated
area for 7 days. It is powerful stuff.

Nah! I could probably get that number from my front garden.......

Save roots, wash and dry them, heat the oven to about 150°C and bake
them with an equal volume of pearl barley until the roots are brittle,
then allow them to cool, still in the oven.

Grind them up with the barley and add them to boiling milk for a rather
excellent substitute for coffee - miles better IMO.
