Fairy Rings in Lawns
Has anyone any experience of these. I have several about 5 feet diameter
and they produce a ring of small funghi which appears from time to time (like now). The ring eventually kills the grass but with a surrounding ring of very fertile grass. Underneath the dead stuff is a lattice of white threads. How to get rid of? How did it come in the first place? Why fairy ring? Why circular? etc? Any useful comments welcome. Mervyn |

To get rid of them use a fungicide, of course.
Why not circular? "Mervyn Thomas" wrote in message news:k9tmc.54$a7.28@newsfe6-win... Has anyone any experience of these. The message k9tmc.54$a7.28@newsfe6-win
from "Mervyn Thomas" contains these words: Has anyone any experience of these. I have several about 5 feet diameter and they produce a ring of small funghi which appears from time to time (like now). The ring eventually kills the grass but with a surrounding ring of very fertile grass. Underneath the dead stuff is a lattice of white threads. How to get rid of? How did it come in the first place? Why fairy ring? Why circular? etc? Probably Marasmius oreades. Small buff fungi with widely-spaced gills, thin leathery stipes, no ring, smell pleasantly of almonds? Google for a pic just to be sure. If you are sure that's what you have, they are excellent to eat. Fried, or in stews, casseroles etc. They dry easily, and rehydrate like new. A very useful mushroom, but don't eat any quantity raw, as the almondy smell is prussic acid. It's broken down during cooking, and evaporates on drying. -- Rusty Open the creaking gate to make a horrid.squeak, then lower the foobar. http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/ |
