Default First earlies gone flat?

Hi,

All my first earlies went flat today, looks like they've had it in one day
of strong sun!

Is there any rescueing them? I'll give them a good water tonight when it's a
bit colder...

Also, whats best, night or morning watering?

Thanks!
Dan

It's not one day of strong sun, here in N. Wales it's been weeks of
dry weather, the sun of the last day or two has just been the last
straw. Get *lots* of water on. Time of day doesn't matter much except
less will be lost by evaporation with evening watering. If scorching
or 'scalding' was worrying you - this is much less likely if you get
the foliage thoroughly wetted. If your hose has been left out in the
sun, water standing in the hose will be very hot so run that off
before you start watering. The weight of water on the flaccid foliage
will pull the stems over - don't worry about it, they won't mind.
Heavy watering about 10 days before lifting will greatly increase the
yield - if you can't water very frequently then that's the time when
using your limited water/time will have the most effect.

Unless they got hot enough to kill their leaves, then they will perk
up. Your strategy is, of course, the right one - but don't worry
too much about when you water.

Also, whats best, night or morning watering?

Dunno. But watering that gets done is better than watering that
doesn't ....

Snap! The same has happened to my International Kidney. Two plants
in mid-row collapsed and I dug them up and had a couple of meals off
them. I am hoping that it is ONLT drought that has caused this. Next
time I go to the allotment I dread what I may find. Our soil is VERY
dry.

I worry about when i go away!

If you can't get anyone to water them you might want to try knocking
up an impromptu watering system.
This is nothing more fancy than as many plastic fizzy pop bottles as
you can lay your hands on, each with a tiny hole pierced in the lid
and a correspondingly tiny hole in the base.

Fill 'em up with water, shove 'em in the ground topside up and they'll
drip away while you're away.

Might be worth experimenting now - it takes a bit of practice to get
the size of the holes right so as to prevent the water gushing out in
a couple of hours, or not at all.

You might try pushing a piece of string through the hole in the lid -
which will act as a wick. Should help to regulate the flow.

Obviously it's not as effective as watering with a hose - but with
enough bottles you could probably get by for a week if the weather's
none too bright.

Check your local tip for water cooler bottles ( or ask around at a
nearby office block ). These hold over a gallon - and make pretty
decent cloches too!

Regards,
