Many thanks to all for the responses....
Still not quite sure if it's Oregano or Marjoram.

The Concise OED says Origanum is wild marjoram.

Yes. It is one of the wild marjorams.

Barwinnock Herbs is a truly wonderful place to buy from. Couldn't be a
great deal further from you being I think in the Highlands. However try this
for a lookie www.barwinnock.com

Could someone tell me what herb this is....

http://www.oofus.com/pix/rbpics/odds/herb.jpg

I'm sure it's a very common variety but I have been
unable to identify it from my books and from web
searches.

Also - I would like to set up a small herb garden.
What advice would you give... I have been unable
to locate specialist herb dealers within striking
distance of Southampton or on the web. Is there a
list somewhere of suppliers...

Many thanks,
Roy
