Default Greenhouses

After the gales trashed my greenhouse, the insurance company has given me
£550 to spend on a new 8X6 one. Anybody care to make recommendations. B&Q
( http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/catego...?CATID=8050139 ) have a
nice looking one with curved perspex eaves, which might (?) make it less
susceptible to wind. However the only greenhouse in the local B&Q warehouse
looks a bit flimsy - you can move the end wall in and out with fingertip
pressure.
Any advice will be very welcome

For around £600 you can get a very sturdy 14X8' by AGL (from their magnum
range) with double sliding doors and 4 vents as standard. (and it still wont
be big enough) they are very strong and have to date survived several 100
mile an hour gales.

I'm just starting out with my first greenhouse, a 6 x 8 Elite Craftsman
which I bought from 'The Greenhouse People' last November. It withstood
those 90mph gales okay. You need a sturdy job cos the insurance company
might not be so happy about another claim. I took my time choosing and
B&Q finished at the bottom of my list.
Download the special offers booklet from
http://www.onlinegreenhouses.co.uk/navigation.htm and see what you
think. They do packages which include staging, auto vents and other
stuff at a reasonable price.
Incidentally, thanks for posting this, it reminded me to check that my
greenhouse was insured.

get some wood and some glass and build one a million times better and much
bigger than the aluminium junk from the garden centres

I agree.
£550 will pay for a bigger, better, safer and more robust greenhouse than
any alumininm contraption.
I have two, one glass and one polycarb sheeting both over woodent frames and
together they didn't cost £550.

Many thanks for the replies. I built my first greenhouse - circa 1973 - from
wood and glass, but eventually a gale got that one. Now, I am getting a bit
old and arthritiky, so I am after the easy option. Sure, Charlie, I'd love a
huge greenhouse, but space does not permit! One last thing - the website
recommended by Don (http://www.onlinegreenhouses.co.uk/navigation.htm )
reckons that applying silicone sealant to W clips and a few other points
reduces the chance of wind damage.

Thanks again for taking the time

Looks very nice... Only one point. Where are you going to get=20
replacement panes for the curve section when B&Q shift supplier? I can=20
buy panes for mine for =A32 since they're the standard size and flat.=20

From an engineering point of view, those panes are less likely to break=20
