Cover the trays with vermiculite or grit after you have sown the seeds.

Vermiculite stays dryer than soil so is (supposedly) less prone to
fungal growth (and algae). Also is a light but supportive medium
through which the seeds will easily raise their heads.
I use it and i think it does help to maximise germination but it is
not necessary.
And it does get algae eventually too.
Dont worry about algae too much. Algae doesnt attack seedlings.

Thanks for help- there is a hard crust on my
seedling trays and i'm sure that this hinders growth and makes watering
difficult.
