i'd give it a while before pronouncing last rites....the recent low winter temps will have been unsettling to an evergreen climber given the mild mid winter.

Isn't it just that they're on the tender side, so if they're going to be
affected by cold, the end of winter is when you'd expect to see the
effects?

Clematis armandii is like other "Evergreen" clematis not truly evergreen but
winter green i.e. it changes its leaves but not during winter and they often
go through a dead looking phase so it may just be this, on the other hand
they are prone to various root rots, and yes they can get wilt but it is not
common.

Was the plant flowering when you got it?

I was thinking it was a cold effect because one branch of mine seems
very dead - ie no leaves, but also no green shoots either, whereas the
other branch is in full flower.

IME it does suffer from unexplained and sudden die-offs, of part or the
whole plant.
