Default Will Roundup work on the Roots?

I posted a message here over the summer about the wild growth of bamboo
in my backyard.

Someone suggested cutting off the stalk and then applying Roundup to
the part I cut.

Now last weekend, I tried digging up some roots, and as you all know
the roots run all over the place.

I dug up a root that traveled from the fence (about 5 feet).

If I cut the stalks and apply the round up...will it kill the root that
runs across the yard?

For example, if this is my bamboo (l = stalk .... = roots)
l....l.........l

If I cut off the first l, and apply roundup, will it kill the ..... ?

If you keep the top growth down the rhizomes (what you call roots)
which are actually underground stems willover time run out of food and
die and rot.
In the soil the roundup will bind to the clay part of the soil and be
unavailable but applied to a freshly cut surface it will help speed the
plant's demise.

What kind of bamboo are you trying to get rid of?

But I am not sure if I will get rid of ALL the bamboo, or just some of
it.

If I get rid of some (so its more "control" and not running wild) will
the rhizomes die?

Here's what I mean: l = stalk .... = rhizomes
l...l......l...

Theres 3 stalks, and the rhizomes is still running after stalk #3 (it
will sprout new stalks in time)
If I cut down stalk #2 and #3, and apply roundoff, will it kill the
rhizomes that are between #2 and #3 and the ones after #3?

I am not getting rid of ALL the top growth (since #1 is still there)

I am not sure, its probably common bamboo (cheap kind).
I live in NY.
Could you email me, I will send you a picture and you can id it for me

Thanks

Have a look at this post:

Roundup is a systemic herbicide, which means that it 'poisons' the whole plant down to the roots even when only painted on the leaves.
