Default Hydrangea

I'm relatively new to gardening and was told a good all round fertizer for all my potted shrubs was Tomerite which i have been using and everything seems to be growing fine. However i have now been told if i use on my Hydrangea i will kill it. I don't want to be feeding with lots of fertilizers do you think i can carry on as i am.
