Speakout: Clear-cutting for runoff 'delusional'
In article , writes: Once again, for the geographically challenged, the Great Plains of North America are not a desert. In fact, they are quite well watered. Not enough to grow a lot of crops in Colorado without water! If you are talking about east Colorado around the Kansas border, the term you are looking for is shortgrass prairie. It is well suited for grazing, and there is plenty of water to grow a nice crop of pine trees without irrigation. Unfortunately, silviculture is not practical if there is no market. Lumber mills are pretty much clustered near pre- existing stands of timber. Yea Eastern Colorado was always known for its great Pine Stands = Not! |

There is no historical evidence for your assertions! I suppose some grazers destroyed all the green trees that use to be in the Sahara desert? That's quite a case of denial you have going there. What is wrong with the evidence that buffalo destroy trees in their range, and that up to 130 years ago there were many millions of buffalo on the Great Plains? And yes, much of the damage in the Sahara, the Middle east, indeed the entire eastern Mediterranean was caused by goats, which also selectively kill trees. -- http://home.teleport.com/~larryc |
