Loggers want to go to work. People want to be safe from fires. The forests need to be healthier, drought resistant and fire resistant. "Management", as opposed to "preservationism" will get our forests resored much quicker than "Mother Nature", as she works on very long cycles without man's intervention. Are you a corporate shill? You might think so, since I do work for the US Forest Service but, I don't have to toe anyone's line. There are tons of restrictions placed on us by widely varying authorities. There is also plenty of grey areas where our own ideas, bias, predilictions and "spirituality" (couldn't think of the right word G ) come into play. ===================== No, but you're still an ignorant shrill, schreeching idiot.. That couldn't be directed at me, since I am a pillar of the community, an authority from the gubmint, a cornerstone of the nation and an "artiste" in the forest. (Insert patritoic music here) Actually, he asked a legitimate question considering the fact Larry Harrel's response included this statement: "Also, If the USFS didn't have to meet all those NEPA guidelines, public opinion, and a multitude of local, regional, state and Federal laws, just like private industry, then maybe we'd make a profit, Fred" Why say "we'd" if he wasn't involved in the industry? There's a chance this guy works in the timber industry. - Norseman Don't forget the BMP guidelines which loggers ignored for so many years. I work for TEAMS Enterprise, part of Region 5's Reinvention Lab ( "created" by Al Gore, of all people )of the US Forest Service. TEAMS is a group who "freelances" natural resource jobs across the country, without ANY Congressional funding. We work somewhat like a private business and have to hunt up our own jobs. I work in the implementation side of TEAMS and have done many different types of natural resource jobs like timber sales, fuels projects, goshawk surveys, timber sale administration and stand exams. I toiled for 18 years as a "temp" with great indignance at being a third-class employee so, I have no great love for the agency but, I do defend it when it needs it and I also point out short-comings. For example, how will Bush come up with the armies of timber folks needed to implement his (or any other's) plan for "fixing" our forests? Seems like he's going with "outsourcing" as a way for private industry to further integrate itself with Federal lands. I'm not convinced that private industry can do very many jobs better than USFS employees. I guess I'll soon be finding out since I forsee that my job will be bending towards the inspection mode in the next 2 years, if Bush gets his way. Larry eco-forestry rules! |
