Default Perth sand improvement

There used to be a group of fellow that advertised on the web that they'd
drop of a trailor load of whatever in exchange for a carton of beer. It was
a legit business that happen to offer mulch, etc for free. However, I
believe it's stopped now.

You can get mulch for free from your local tip.

Hi

I'm looking at trying to establish a vegetable garden (approx 100sq

metres)
in my Perth backyard.

The problem is, as anyone who knows Perth will know,is that it's one big

sand pit

My current thoughts are to get a load of dried chicken manure (is there a
way of getting large quantities of this stuff for free ?), spread this on
the sand, cover this with fresh grass clippings, more chicken manure, more
grass and etc. Keep this damp using scheme water for about 3 months, turn
the whole area over with a spade and then dig again with a fork.

Repeat above and repeat one more time. This should take me to about

October
when I can finally start my summer crop planting.

The questions are :

1. Is it possible to get large quantities of manure (any kind) for free ?
2. Using the process above, is it reasonable to expect that the sand will
be substantially improved ?
3. Is there likely to be sufficient nutrients in the soil to support
reasonably intensive vegetable growing ?
4.Does anyone have any other ideas for turning sand into soil ?

Thanks very much for all assistance.

Ivan.

What a pity they've stopped !

I didn't think about mulch from the tip - some of us just aren't very
bright I suppose *LOL*

Never mind, my brother knows a fellow with a 11m3 tipper so I'll bite the
bullet and get him to pick up 2 or 3 loads of chook poop for me. I made
some enquiries on the cost and one of the local farms (southern river)
offers to load a trailer (any -reasonable- size) for $20/load. I'm
expecting that the tipper will cost in the region of $100/load but that
seems like a good investment.

I'll go with the original plan, rotary hoe just before planting to make
sure everything is really well mixed in and then do a soil test.

Thanks for the replies.

Ivan.

Raelene

are you anywhere near Ballajura? You're welcome to as much of my Mt Everest
