Default [IBC] Mugo Pine

Iris,
The answer is maybe.
If the tree has enough energy stores it may re-foliate in spring and live.
If the tree is too weak it will just give up.
I would not repot it in spring if it is that weak. Repot in early summer
after needles harden off.
Good luck.

I have had a terrible time with those miniature mugo pines from Iseli. One
problem is keeping them over the winter. In tiny pots, they dry out too eaily.
I have another one now, 'Mops,' which is badly in need of repotting. I tried
to watch it closely over the winter, but the needles are all dead. However,
there is green under the bark and the buds are swelling and appear very much
alive. It is now outdoors, except when it goes below freezing. Is this a flash
in the pan, or can I expect the plant to survive if I am careful? When is the
best time to repot it in Zone 5?
Iris,

Does anyone have a URL for the upkeep on Mugo Pines? I bought an ugly little nursery
reject and threw it in the ground. It wintered well in my location, Zone 6.5 with a
little mulch. It does have some really ugly branches where four or five branches come out
of the same knob. How does this specie handle being cut back?

Default [IBC] Mugo Pine

Hi Iris,

Mugho pines are tough little trees. I've never completely defoliated one
but came near with a restyle of mine last year. This one is also 'Mops'
and had been planted in a raised bed for five years. This thickened the
trunk nicely but it was a dense ball of foliage with no inner budding. I
removed about 70% of the branches and reduced everything to the lowest
candles. It backbudded better than any pine I've ever worked on and is
now starting to look like it will eventually make something reasonable.

I think yours could well make it. Just treat like most other pines. Full
sun, water only when drying. They are completely hardy and don't need
frost protection. RHS says down to -15C with no problem.

Hope this helps

You can cut it back really hard. The swellings can be reduced so long as
the sap lines to the remaining branches aren't interrupted. It responds
well and the increased light on the trunk and inner branches will
encourage back budding.

Hope this helps

No url, but for those interested in a paper version, International Bonsai
has a whole issue devoted to Mugho pines. There is a nice piece in there by
Walter Pall with some great inspiration. I think it is from 2001 or 2002
(sorry for the vagueness, if anyone is interested I can pin it down for
you).

I also had problems with Mops. Lost 2 out of 4 specimens. Seem to be less
hardy than the species. Still, they are an interesting variety; so I'm
still working with them.

Four years ago I fell in love with the new miniature Mugo pines from

Iseli, but
my love is unrequited. One that I did at a workshop died (as did most of

them).
I lost a 'Paul's Dwarf' from improper potting. I lost another 'Paul's

Dwarf'
and a 'Mops' from some problem with overwintering. Right now I have a
'Slowmound' which was just styled & repotted at a workshop, & seems fine.

I
also have a baby 'Paul's Dwarf' in a growing pot. Has anybody got an

impression
of the actual difference in the various cultivars, as far as bonsai

performance
is concerned?
Gotta run. We just got a frost warning.

Dale,

I'd like to order a pot similiar to the one below. The tree is a black pine and the oval shape will compliment the style of the tree. The tree is very feminine and I believe this pot will work well. I'll need to repot in the Spring 2004, so there's no hur
ry. Just wanted to get on your list when you start to throw pots later in the year. I measured and I need approx.16X11X2.5. The sizes are inside & approx...but I need the 2.5 inside depth. Let me know how much ;-)

Thanks again -
Randi

I have a mugo in a nursery pot and in nursery soil. I plan to move it to a training pot, and the appropriate soil, in the spring when the weather conditions are more agreeable for working with mugo roots in my temp zone. Until two weeks ago the tree was d
oing fine. Within the last two weeks I noticed that the older needles have started to turn brown. Also, laterally the tree is breaking bud and the buds are starting to open with needles approx 1/18 to 1/8 inch in length. While the lateral buds are breakin
g, the terminal buds are tight and remain tighly closed as I would expect them to be at this time in the season. The crown remains very green, with no noticable bud break or buds swelling. The crown also does not show and tendency towards browning. Any th
oughts as to what could cause the tree to brown and also break bud at this late date in the season?

I've been waiting for some of our learned colleagues to answer your mugo
pine questions, but I guess an answer isn't forthcoming.

FYI ... I have two mugo's. One appears happy with normal growth patterns and
the other (in a nursery pot/soil) is doing exactly what you've described. I
guess all I can do is sympathize with you, and wait for spring !!
