Default Help with J. Maple

I have a maple that is determined to die from the crown down. This tree is
about 8 yrs. old , and I would like to save the main trunk and root system
if possible. Should I go ahead and chop it off and hope for the best.

And if so should I make the cut horizontal or at an angle. Your thoughts
will be appreciated.
