Blackwalnut Tree and an Asparugus Bed
After visity my distant asparugus beds for the 1st time in a year, I noticed
that an evil squirrel had planted a Black Walnaut tree in the midst of the bed. Its tap root is very deep, is it better to dig it out, and risk damage of the crowns, or hit it with brush begone and kill it systemically? Nartker @ AOL.com Nartker |

Nartker @ AOL.com Nartker The roots of the black walnut emit a natural herbicide (inaccurate but same effect) that will kill off anything else. Sparagus are a long-term investment, so the choice is simple: remove it asap. Personally, I would dig it out and avoid using any pesticides where the asparagus grow. A couple of shovels of manure where you disturbed any crowns and they will forgive you! just my opinion, of course John in Canaduh |

Have a look at this site: http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/nursery/430-021/430-021.html It suggests that juglone can be released from decomposing roots, so you may want to go after the root as best you can. The tree is not over one year old, correct? Lop it off (and be prepared to lop it off a few more times to prove you mean business). The amounts of juglone released will, IMO, have a trivial effect compared to disturbing the bed. Bill -- I do not post my address to news groups. |

Blackwalnut Tree and an Asparugus Bed
After a good soaking watering or heavy rain a one year old BW tree will pull
up, roots and all from a mellow well cultivated place like a sparegrass bed. No need to break out the heavy artillery or make 4 or 5 trips. LRK |

All I have to deal with are the pesky maple and elm seedlings and NONE of them get to have a first birthday party. Bill -- I do not post my address to news groups. |

Just lop it off a couple of times.
Contrary to popular myth, juglone doesn't instantly kill everything it touches. the effect from a one year tree will be trivial. There's more information about both asparagus and black walnut at: http://www.efn.org/~bsharvy/edible.html |

From watching a local garden show last night, I understand that the roots
must physically touch for there to be a problem. "Ben Sharvy" wrote in message om... Just lop it off a couple of times.
