Default need Green Tomatoe uses

Hi...

anyone have any uses for green tomatoes beyond frying them? i could
spend all day eating them fried, but the rest of the family would rather
try something new now and then. Thanks in advance

I've read that they can be used as a substitute for
tomatillos in salsa recipes - Salsa Verde, that would be -
or in other recipes calling for tomatillos.

Recipes: http://www.recipesource.com - just type
'tomatillo' in the search box.

In addition to using them as a substitute for tomatillos, if
you go to http://www.recipesource.com and type 'green
tomato' in the recipe box, it will present you with a list
of 136 recipes using green tomatoes!

Wow. That's a lot of recipes for green tomatoes!

PS - **HOWEVER** disregard any recipes at recipesource.com
which tell you to do unsafe things such as canning mincemeat
without the use of a pressure canner.

I just realized that there's at least one recipe like that
listed. The recipes are just presented - obviously, they
are not edited for safety in any way.

Please do not can anything in an unsafe manner - unsafe
canning can result in botulism which is often fatal.

All kinds of good info on safe canning can be found at the
website of the National Center for Home Food Preservation:

I don't remember the recipe, or the name it went by, but "green tomato
relish" is mighty tasty.
Ken.

I actually used them to make "green" salsa one year (canned). Actually I
liked it better than the salsa we can with ripe tomatoes.

------
I fried green tomatoes before but never really enjoyed them all
that much, but this year I tried something new and I loved them.
Here's my new recipie:

1.) Cut Green Tomatoes about 1/4 inch thick.

2.) Dip tomato slices in egg mixture seasoned with salt & pepper.
Then coat both sides with cracker meal.

3.) Fry the tomato slices in vegetable oil seasoned with garlic.
Fry them just until they begin to brown but don't overcook them
to the point where they get soft and mushy. The oil should be very
hot.

4.) Drain the fried tomato slices on a paper towel.

OK, HERE'S THE GOOD PART...

5.) Top the fried slices with spaghetti sauce or pizza sauce and
shredded mozarella cheese and place them on a grill or screen
mesh and cook them in your toaster oven or regular oven at 450
degrees F until the cheese melts and just begins to brown.

Note: What I found is that the sauce topping really brightens the
taste of the green tomatoes and the cheese gives it body and
texture. Much better than plain fried green tomatoes.

I just googled on

"green tomato" recipe

and came up with soup, pickles, mincemeat, chow-chow, and casserole on
the first page. Oh, and fried, of course. :-)
