Default fungi found in garden

Hi all, just a quick question. I found this fungi growing beside my compost
heap in my UK garden yesterday. It is purple in colour and measures about
2.5 inches tall. Can anyone help me to identify it? Thanx in advance.

It looks like Lepista nuda. In English the name is Wood Blewitt.

Hmmm, nice photo of surrounds too. I've no idea but these guys might
know.

They'll probably want to know size, type of gills, spore print, and
so on .. :-)

Actually, they're Californian, but they were the best I found after a
quick search. And they have lots of photos. Not to mention a 'key'
that helps describe them.
Although sometimes I've found it's easier to look at a book in the
library.

They should post this to alt.nature.mushrooms

An excellent forum and quiet this time of year since there are so few
mushrooms growing.

I will second Lepista nuda, a name I love because it sounds so obscene. See:
http://www.funghiitaliani.it/foto/nuda/2.jpg for another picture.

See also this article http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/nov98.html,
which discusses other purple mushrooms as well as Lepista nuda.
