How do I grow raspberries and blueberries?
Hello All:
I live in the south eastern part of Ontario. Can anyone tell me how to grow raspberries and blueberries? I heard that you had to have more than one plant in order for them to survive. Is this true? If so, which two do I need? Are there male and female plants or is that a dumb questions? (hey, they have male and female plugs, why not plants?????) Also, when is the best time to plant them? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

How much room do you have? And what pH is your soil.
Blue berries need acidic soil. I would imagine your soil is OK, but you may want to have it tested. Two types would be OK (don't worry about male/female). I have been told not to plant black and red raspberries within several hindered feet of each other (don't know why). Maybe they cross pollinate and lose some of their flavor. Make sure they are for growing in the North. They grow wild in Alaska and the UP of Michigan so I know they are available. I think you can plant them in the spring or fall, but contact your catalog company and ask them when they recommend you do it. If you dont have someone to order from, let me know and I will look up some of them for you. Good luck. Dwayne "lcain" wrote in message om... Hello All: I live in the south eastern part of Ontario. The cultural requirements are quite different, but for either, you may have
one or any number of plants. They are planted in the spring as soon as the ground can be worked. Blueberries require acid soil which makes them difficult to grow in most gardens. Raspberries are easier to grow, particularly the red type, which are the hardiest. "lcain" wrote in message om... Hello All: I live in the south eastern part of Ontario. How do I grow raspberries and blueberries?
For blueberries get a highbush version cold hardy for your area. Dig
a hole 2-3 times as big as the plant, at least 1 - 1 1/2 feet deep and 1 1/2 feet wide if it's a tiny plant, fill it with 2/3 peat moss, 1/3 your soil. Blueberries are either early, mid, or late season bloomers. For maximum yield, get 2 that bloom in the same part of the season (for cross-pollination). For maximum picking time, get some early, some mid and some late. Blueberries like to be mulched. On 9 Feb 2003 17:01:33 -0800, (lcain) wrote: Hello All: I live in the south eastern part of Ontario.
