Default Aqua Medic 500 CO2 Reactor

Can this unit be used as a stand alone unit without routing the output
to a filter, i.e. just venting its output to the tank?

Thats what it is designed for, except it has to be hooked up to a
small pump or powerhead, you can't hook it up to a filter. The pump
pushes water thru the top of the reactor, and the force of the water
pushes the C02 bubble down the coil inside the reactor. You do not
want a pump with to fast a flow rate in order for this thing to work
properly.

I assume I turn the spool valve until there is sufficient back

There is a little dain bramage at the old Bar S tonight.

"flow into the regulator" should read flow into the reactor.

The water from the pump does not actually go into the reactor, it goes
straight thru the top.
