Is it worth getting a gift subscription? What about Gardeners World?

Can anybody suggest a good gardening gift? Or a company I could have a look into? Kate: I have a suggestion for the gardener in your life who already has just about every gardening tool, etc. My new novel, TIME IN A GARDEN, has been very well received by gardeners--it ranked second in paperback sales in Northern Michigan, for example. It is laced with gardening wit and wisdom. It tells the story of a group of senior citizens who band together to plant a community garden in an attempt to revive their dying rural town. In the process, gardening becomes a metaphor for the changes that all experience as we advance in years. The gardening crew grows together as they experience love and loss. The novel is available from amazon.com, barnes and noble and lulu.com. You can read an excerpt at these sites and learn more about my publications. TIME IN A GARDEN is a very different kind of gift for a gardener. I know it will be appreciated and received as a thoughtful and loving gift. Thanks for reading. If the intended gift recipient cannot shop online, I'm sure Gardener's would send out a printed catalog. There is also www.yardiac.com and several others I'm sure. And a gift certificate is good if you do not know for certain of a specific need. I suppose most gardneers would alos like a GC from a store like Lowe's or HD or a local nursery. Many gardening tools, especially those for weeds, are off-season now
and offered at a discount in this time of year. Do a Google search for "weed tools", "weed pullers" or "weed twisters" to search for these tools. Depending on the area, many people need tools for weeding even in December! Happy weed tool shopping! Kate wrote: Can anybody suggest a good gardening gift? Or a company I could have a look into? |

Same town? No I quite quite some distance. Eh? Anyway, get your friend one of these. It's the single most useful garden tool in the universe. http://www.seedsofchange.com/garden_...tem_no=PS12326 What makes it work is its shape and its thickness. Nothing to do with sharpness. If I caught someone stealing my lawnmower, I'd let them take it. If I caught someone stealing this tool, I'd hack their head off with the tool and send it home to their mommy in a lawn and leaf bag. It's that good a tool. |

I bought one of those Hori-Hori Diggers from Smith & Hawken 14 years ago. The scabbard lasted only 2 months but the tool is excellent and I still use it. I wrote to S&H to complain about the scabbard falling apart. They sent me another knife and scabbard, no questions asked. I gave the new set to my son-in-law. His scabbard fell apart after a few months but he is still using the digging knife to this day and he uses it much more than I do. |

But, the knife is amazing. What the hell happened to S&H anyway? On many visits to their site, I find they don't list half the large digging tools as in the past. Then, one some days, I see them....and a week later, gone! It's turned into an overly expensive garden accessory gallery. |

To JoeSpareBedroom:
Looked up your link and saw this message: "We are sorry, the short-handled garden knife has been discontinued. We apologize for the inconvenience". For about the same price, you may get a Weed Twister from Ergonica with sharpened tines that works great for weeds and also makes a good defense weapon. Makes a great Trail Buddy for a walking staff, path clearance, poison ivy mover, and defense weapon to keep predatory animals (including 2-legged critters) at a distance. You can also use it to mark your trail in case your in unfamiliar territory. Can you do all that with your knife?
