"Bocu" -- fascinating spelling-by-ear for "beaucoup".

It's a plosive actually. Nothing guttural about it. The v is pronounced
but the French get off of it very quickly. It's like saying moi (m-wa),
except with a v.

P, why do many Americans spell/pronounce voila as walla? Was the
mispronounciation a catchphrase used in cartoons, perhaps?

Janet

I have often seen it spelled 'viola'
Always wondered whether they thought it referred to the plant or the
musical instrument?? And what did either one have to do with anything?
Or did they even think........

"Walla" can be explained as follows.

If we (Americans) were to approximate the real word "voila", we could
write "v-walla", so they're just leaving off the "v".

Vive la difference!

Its always made me think that they thought they were writing it the
way it would sound if it was a latin word. [at least the way I was
taught to speak latin] I've never heard anyone pronounce it that
way. [lived in Northeast US most of life]

Cute kids but they were wrong. It's pronounced "bow-coo" with the same
em-pha-sis on each syl-a-bleh, Saint Cloud, ball-de match;)
