oups.com: Anyone know of a way to rid these gardening related newsgroups from that obviously confused M15 British spammer? A real pest. he posts to pretty much every group his current provider carries & has been doing so since at least 1993. he posts, he gets his account yanked for spamming, he's quiet for a bit until he finds a new provider, wash, rinse, repeat, ad nauseum. short answer is just report him to his provider & hope it's not one that doesn't give a damn about spammers. if you do report him, abuse needs full headers, full text & when & where you saw the posts (IOW, if you see it on 15 groups, say which ones, but you only need the headers & text from one). meanwhile, you're 2 weeks late bitching, as he lost his last provider about 10 days ago. lee also getting a real newsreader instead of using Google helps cut the visible spam immensely |

OE has rudimentary filtering. for a free downloadable newsreader, i like xNews (i've been using it for over 10 years). Free Agent is the trial version of Agent, which loads of people like. i'm not one of them do you know if your ISP carries newsgroups? if they gave you info on a NNTP server they do. if not, there are several servers you can subscribe to, some have minimal annual fees & there are a couple that are still free. really, pretty much anything is better than trying to read usenet through Google! lee |

That's being polite. =) for a free downloadable newsreader, i like xNews (i've been using it for over 10 years). There's a *much* newer version out, than the one you're using. =) (Ignore the "Test" in the file name, Luu has a weird way of naming files. It's only the exe in the "Test" version.) Free Agent is the trial version of Agent, which loads of people like. i'm not one of them Incomplete filtering with even the paid version of Agent. Don't bother. It's either Xnews or Dialog, for Windows. Nothing else even comes close to their filtering capabilities. do you know if your ISP carries newsgroups? if they gave you info on a NNTP server they do. if not, there are several servers you can subscribe to, some have minimal annual fees & there are a couple that are still free. really, pretty much anything is better than trying to read usenet through Google! Which is a good reason to filter G2 right down the tube. =) -- Eggs A computer scientist is someone who, when told to 'Go to Hell', sees the 'go to', rather than the destination, as harmful. |

It's got a good filter system for taking care of such things. I've got set up to mark the thread read, and to ignore it. Most likely no need to mark it read first but oh well. Been SO long since I'd seen any posts I had to check my filter to see if I was indeed filtering them. Really a dream.. Plus love having all my email, news groups and RSS subscriptions in one place. Hell of alot more secure than OE, too. POS that it is. |
