Default garlic as bug repellent?

Hi All,

I have a little organic garden. I am scared to death
of squash bugs.

What do you guys think of planting garlic to keep the little
buggers away?

How close to the squash do they have to be?

And, will any old garlic do (I don't plan to eat the
garlic)?
