Default Porch ceiling bug problems

We have a covered porch and deck with a silver blue white ceiling that
is being ruined by insects! We don't turn on any lights at night to
try and keep from drawing them, but still are plagued with bug spots,
spiders trying to catch the bugs. In the daytime the ceiling is
covered with mosquitoes then at night some get in the house every time
the door opens! Do we have to spray poison all over the ceiling to
eliminate them? My mom said to spray a broom with poison and "sweep"
the ceiling with it, but I wonder how often I'll have to do this and
what poison to use. Suggestions, please?
